Elk Lake
Meadow
I first came across this scene while on an exploratory
day hike in the cascade lakes region near Bend,
Oregon. I was amazed at the profusion of wild
flowers accentuated by Elk Lake with the regal
South Sister as a backdrop. While composing
this image I was constantly being buzzed by
dozens of rufous hummingbirds, one of my favorite
avian species. Because I exclusively use a large
format camera and I prefer that my images have
excellent depth of field, I often require long
exposures to achieve the print quality I desire.
I knew that hummingbirds zipping across my field
of view would only register as an unsightly
blur on my exposed film. Therefore I carefully
selected rare hummingbird free moments to expose
my film and capture this beautiful scene. |
