Basalt
Columns
Part of what makes my home state of Oregon special
is its remarkable geographic diversity. Lush
rainforests to arid high deserts, glaciated
alpine peaks to rich riparian streamsides and
expansive sandy beaches to geometric volcanic
basalt flows can all be found within hours of
one another. The lichen covered basalt columns
in this image are adjacent to a lush streamside
and within view of several snow covered volcanoes
in the Three Sisters area of Central Oregon.
I'd viewed these columns several times in the
past and tried in vain to combine them with
other photographic elements for a stronger image.
Eventually, out of frustration I decided to
photograph the columns by themselves so that
I could stop fretting over them. After processing
the image, I was pleased to realize that this
one simple element of our diverse Central Oregon
landscape allowed for a successful composition. |
